The Thau Lagoon heritage

Rooted in ancient history, the Thau Lagoon is a land of culture and traditions, rich with an amazing heritage.

With the canals that criss-cross the city, the Mont St Clair offering an exceptional panorama, a picturesque and vibrant fishing harbour and 12km of beaches, Sète certainly has all the ingredients for a voyage of discovery. ‘The Exceptional Island’ is home to many museums, artist’s studios and celebrities. The Regional Museum of Contemporary Art and the International Museum of Modest Art accommodate exhibitions throughout the year. The city is proud of its great men, lauding Paul Valery and Georges Brassens. Enthusiasts will enjoy the festivities and traditions.

Le St Barth

Conveniently sited between the Thau Lagoon and the sea, this former fishing village has retained the charm and authenticity of the marina, with its old houses bordering the vineyards. It is here, close to the docks, that Noilly-Prat develops its world-famous dry vermouth, and has done so, in the greatest secrecy, since 1813. It is also here, in the Thau Lagoon, that the Canal du Midi ends, after a 241km route. "The Bateaux du Soleil" will take you on an exceptional cruise of the canal, with stunning views of Mont St Clair.

Art of living

Ville de Frontignan

The Thau Lagoon is bursting with gourmet delights: Sete’s own specialities (tielle and macaronade), shellfish (oysters, mussels) and the “Listel” wine and Noilly-Prat, the famous vermouth created in Marseillan cellars.
The Tourism Office of Sète organise "Savouring Southern France Gourmet Walking Tour" : a guided walking tour in English, including tastings of products to enable you to discover the gourmet delights of the local area. Meet the people who produce the local Sète specialities: a tielle (local fish pie) maker, a Sète fishmonger, an oyster grower, a wine merchant, etc.
The Muscat of Frontignan is also a great delight. The Tourism Office offers a two-hour guided foot tour of the vineyards, unlocking the secrets of wineries and sampling the vineyard’s wares, which include grape juice, Muscat bread and Muscat jam, obviously!

Outdoor Activities

The heart of this unspoilt and diverse Mediterranean area offers a wealth of opportunities for the whole family; from the Thau lagoon, to the Massif de la Gardiole.

Frontignan en Pays de Thau

Water activities are a must, either on the lagoon or on the Mediterranean Sea itself: sailing, kite surfing, sea kayaking, scuba diving, or, an exclusively Marseillan treat, water-skiing! Cycle-tracks and pedestrian paths invite exploration of this territory’s hidden gems, criss-crossing the land between the sea and the lagoons of Vic-la-Gardiole, or along the open pools between Sete and Marseillan on the green belt to Meze Balaruc and even the imposing Massif de la Gardiole.
